Indonesian migrant workers are increasingly present in Europe, contributing to local economies while promoting Indonesia’s culture abroad. Despite opportunities in sectors like healthcare and services, they face challenges such as language barriers, diverse regulations, and risks from non-procedural migration. Ongoing cooperation and protection programs aim to ensure safe, legal, and dignified placements.
Main Destination Countries in Europe
Several European countries are destinations for Indonesian Migrant Worker placements, including the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany. Germany has inter-governmental cooperation programs (G to G) for the placement of nurses through the regularly opened Triple Win scheme, indicating a demand for health workers there.
Indonesian Migrant Worker
Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) are one of the significant contributors of foreign exchange to the country. Although the majority of Indonesian Migrant Worker are in the Asian region, the number of Indonesian citizens residing or working in Europe continues to increase.
Role and Contribution
In Europe, PMI are spread across various sectors, both formal and informal. In addition to providing economic contributions through remittances to Indonesia, PMI also act as "national ambassadors" who introduce Indonesian culture and positive image on the international stage.
Challenges and Protection
PMI in Europe face various challenges, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and diverse labour regulations in each country. Major problems often arise due to non-procedural or illegal departures, which are vulnerable to exploitation and human trafficking.
The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Manpower and the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), continues to strive to strengthen protection for PMI in Europe by establishing cooperation and ensuring placements are carried out procedurally. These efforts include opening safe and trusted placement channels, as informed through the official SISKOP2MI BP2MI portal.
Generally, Europe is seen as a potential job market, especially for high-skilled workers, in line with the need for productive labour in countries experiencing aging populations.
